Urban design of Shantou historical and cultural reserve, Guangdong

Shantou small park area is planned and constructed based on the western urban planning ideas and combined with the changes of natural terrain. The urban form and pattern have the typical characteristics of the combination of Chinese and western, and have the rare star shaped and radial spatial structure in China. Small park area is the most prosperous commercial center in Shantou in the 1930s and the historical symbol of Shantou's century old commercial port. After Shantou was officially opened as a foreign trade port in 1861, foreign businessmen poured in to open shops, set up foreign firms and build buildings. At the beginning of the Republic of China, the small park has become the main business district of Shantou. In 1930, Shantou was officially established and began comprehensive municipal construction, widening paved roads, widely building shops, foreign shops, teahouses, pubs and cultural facilities, developing urban transportation, expanding the urban area, and showing the scene of "the rise of construction industry is very popular for a time". During this period, the construction formed a prosperous "four immortals and one Shengping" emerging business district with Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion as the center and radiating everywhere. The small park area has become the most prosperous business center of Shantou, and Shantou's urban economic strength once ranked seventh in the country. Today's small park has faded from its former style and glory, but everyone who knows the vicissitudes of Shantou for a hundred years has a good memory of this familiar old place.


In order to give better play to the role of urban planning and design in the allocation of social resources, this urban design takes about 2 square kilometers around the small park as the scope and aims to restore the healthiest state of the small park area.
