The design of Shuimo town in Wenchuan new town for post disaster reconstruction won the praise of the domestic urban planning industry. Recently, it won the "global best example award for post disaster reconstruction planning and design" issued by the United Nations in New York, the United States.

As the chief designer of this design, Professor Chen Keshi, vice president of the school of urban planning and design of Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University and director of China Urban Design Research Center, has quietly settled in Shenzhen for ten years.


A new scenic town written by designers

Carved windows, green tiles, pavilions, and mountains... This is not a famous traditional Chinese ancient city, but Shuimo Town, which has just been rebuilt in the Wenchuan earthquake stricken area. Yesterday afternoon, the reporter saw the model of the town in the corridor of the school of urban planning and design of Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University.

Shuimo Town, slowly spreading along the mountain, looks like a smart Chinese ink painting under the reflection of a pool of blue waves. It is understood that after the reconstruction of Shuimo Town, the Shuimo people who have lived here for a lifetime returned to their former residence, and many people nearly got lost. It turned out that Shuimo town before the earthquake was the main industrial town in Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province. A large number of highly polluting enterprises emit a lot of dust, black smoke and sewage every day. Local people complain that there is a layer of ash on the vegetables they eat every day.

Today's Shuimo town vaguely reminds some elderly residents of their childhood life. Indeed, in the rebuilt Shuimo Town, the traditional architectural style of Qiang nationality has gained new life after being combined with modern architectural style. It is understood that when Shouxi old street, the most traditional ethnic style, was just half built, businesses selling Douhua, tea and tourism products began to pour in.

In fact, before winning the "global best example award for post disaster reconstruction planning and design" issued by the United Nations, the design has won many heavyweight national planning and design awards such as the "first prize of 2009 national excellent post disaster reconstruction urban and rural planning and Design Award".


Green concept embodied in a better life

Professor Chen told reporters that now it seems that one of the most prominent features of this design is that it embodies the concept of green and sustainability. "Post disaster reconstruction is not simply to build some houses for the victims mechanically, but to create a better life for them, which requires industrial support, and we believe that the most developable thing in Wenchuan is the tourism and cultural industry."

"The Wenchuan earthquake turned the original Shuimo town into ruins, and also enabled us to rethink and choose the economic development mode and environment of the town." Chen Keshi believes that green and sustainability are the core concepts of human habitat in the future. "Therefore, according to the concept of green and sustainability, we first adjusted the industrial layout of Shuimo town from the first high energy consumption and high pollution industry to a new economy focusing on tourism, leisure vacation, education and service industry. Then, starting from this concept, we determined the planning and design objectives and Strategies of Shuimo town."

After a large number of factories originally regarded as "Jinshan Yinshan" by the local people completely withdrew from Shuimo Town, the economic development speed and residents' living standards did not decline, but there was a gratifying development driven by tourism. It is understood that due to the consideration of the livelihood of local residents in the design, the reconstructed houses are also equipped with stores and courtyards. Nowadays, many residents have opened restaurants, photo studios and even inns in their homes. Coupled with the beautiful local scenery, the life of Shuimo people has become more and more moist.


Reappearance of traditional culture in poetry and painting

The original farmland is covered with sparkling blue waves, and the original high-voltage line tower has become a poetic viewing Pavilion. Chen Keshi believes that urban construction and planning is not only civil engineering technology, but also the emotional sustenance of residents for their homes. Another feature of the town's design is that it reproduces the value of human history and traditional architecture. "When we do this design, we hope to respect the value of Chinese traditional architecture, such as Feng Shui theory. Many reflect the Chinese traditional wisdom of 'imitating nature' and 'the unity of heaven and man'. For example, many Chinese traditional buildings are inseparable from water. We think that only water can have spirit. In fact, there is a space that can be opened only with water, so we have designed an artificial lake here."

Facts have proved that in the whole design of Shuimo Town, this Shouxi lake is one of the most favored designs in the industry. According to reports, it used to be a large area of corn farmland. According to the design scheme, the construction assistance working group bought it from local residents and dug an artificial lake here. "How to maintain the water quality of the artificial lake? We use the traditional technology of Dujiangyan to filter sand with stones. Only 2000 years ago, the ancients used bamboo baskets to filter sand with stones. Now we use steel bars to make baskets."

The spring breeze Pavilion by the lake also reflects a strong charm of Chinese traditional culture. It is reported that this was originally a high-voltage line tower. "There is a Tang poem: why should the Qiang flute blame the willows? The spring breeze doesn't pass the Yumen pass, so we imagined building a viewing platform here that can overlook the whole town, and then planting willows on both sides. In the future, when the willows depend on each other and the Qiang flute is long, there will be a natural poetic and picturesque feeling here, so we named it 'spring breeze Pavilion'."

Professor Chen believes that the pavilions reflect the poetic landscape design concept of the Chinese people and are the embodiment of the humanistic spiritual world. Lake water, high platforms, willows and pavilions. With the spring breeze Pavilion, people can climb high and look far and bring wine to the wind.
